    Description

Rare Hand Crafted Korwar Figure Carved from Tropical Wood in West Papua, Cenderawasih Bay Region,
    18 inches (45.7 cm) high x 6 ½ inches (16.5 cm) wide x 8 inches (20.3 cm) deep
The item is dense and weighs 5 pounds.
    Circa: 20
    th
    Century
Condition: The left leg might have been broken off (or possibly stabilized with a partial break) and carefully glued back on. The item is dirty, I didn’t try to clean it and it has evidence of age and many imperfections.
Description: This item was purchased as, part of an auction lot along with a Marquesan stilt step, a Samoan bowl, and other old South Pacific carvings. I have never traveled to this area, nor do I have expertise in items from West Papua. So to be cautious, a good working assumption is that it could have been made in a small village for the purpose of selling it to the occasional adventure traveler; rather than for indigenous tribal use. Even so, it is rare for objects of this type to be offered for sale. As a work of art, it has a sturdy sculptural presence and a serene disposition.
