Description
Pua woven textile of theIban Dayak
people, from the Sarawak region, island of Borneo, Malaysia. This ceremonial ikat weaving is woven in two pieces and hand-stitched down the middle. The detailed woven designs include anthropomorphic figures surrounded by what look like stylized angular serpents or snakes, and other stylized figures and designs. Of note in the design are what looks like rows of propeller-driven airplanes (see pictures). Speculation here, but perhaps this weaving is to commemorate the Dayak tribesmen, who in 1944 rescued U.S. Army Airmen when their B-24 bomber crashed in Borneo. The Dayak people protected the airmen from the Japanese until they could be rescued by Australian special forces.
In colors of earthtone browns and beige, bluish-black, this weaving measures 34 by 85 inches (86 by 216cm). Given the above, would date this weaving to the mid-1900s.
This will be shipped loosely rolled.
