    Description

Circa 1900-20’s NAVAJO Crystal Double Saddle Blanket 58”x36”- Valero Stars
Offered here is a circa 1900-1920, open field Navajo saddle blanket that measures 4 feet 10 inches long by 3 foot wide and is in excellent condition.  It was woven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of both Native hand shorn, hand carded and nicely handspun excellent quality Merino sheep wool and silky long staple Churro sheep wool (transitional orange & turkey red), both warp & weft.  As they prized themselves as great horsemen, one of the most valued textiles to be crafted by the southwestern American Indian was the saddle blanket woven to use on their horse.  Here is an example for all the old saddle blanket collectors who hunt for only the unique ones.  This is a classy old double saddle with all the bells and whistles.  It has the nicest original big, generous augmented corner tassels that I have ever seen on a double saddle blanket.  The design features 10 Valero stars, one in each corner and 2 rows of 3 across the centerline.  The corner stars are each placed in a dark brown window that has a fine 3-color meandering zigzag outline framing those windows.  This piece shows just a little indigenous use that has been repaired, but is still in excellent condition.  The repair was 9” of selvage cord being replaced on each side of the blanket.  It has a smooth, even weft count averaging 22 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch.  The selvage cords are 100% complete and in excellent condition.  Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 3-spiral cords.  The corners are all original and in excellent condition.  The augmented tassels are as nice as they come on a double saddle blanket, original and in excellent condition.  No bleed, no holes, no odors, no moth-bites and no fade. There is one small light spot at one end and some mottling in the white, 1” x 2 ½”.  There are 2 very small repairs in the white measuring 1” x ½” & 3” x ½” and one in a star measuring ¾” x 1”.  Both sides are even in color and shown in photos below.  It lays flat & smooth and is symmetrical. Colors are bright and strong in this piece of American Indian art and they are:  hand carded natural ivory white & variegated dark chocolate brown along with hand dyed after-bath black, light gold, turkey red and transitional orange.  Complete with lazy lines, nice example.
Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact.
    * Photographs often are the greatest testament to actual condition.  Please study the pictures carefully as they are the greater part of the description.
