A Masterful Hand-Carved Māori Waka Taua Replica
Signed by James Rickard in 1987
It is a rare occurrence to find a piece carved by Tohunga Whakairo (Master Carver) James Rickard, and a true joy to marvel over its design. This elegant and breathtaking replica Māori war canoe features smooth and precise edges and traditional motifs accentuated by brilliant and nacreous Paua shells.
Master Carver James Rickard was one of the first intake of students at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (no known as Te Puia) in 1967. Since then, he has gone on to teach, mentor, and present the Māori art of Whakairo in New Zealand and abroad.
This war canoe seats on a pedestal that is signed and dated by Rickard.
Condition:
This art piece is in NEAR MINT condition. There are very few signs of use or wear and no major damage or repair. There are two small nicks to the reverse of the pedestal at the foot that appear to have been part of the piece at creation, however, they bear mentioning. Otherwise, the wood and Paua are lustrous, and this piece is exceptionally well preserved. This would be an amazing addition to your collection!
