COVER PHOTO
The "Roarin' Elgin" was financially the least promising of Chicago's three interurbans that survived the 1930s Great Depression. Indeed it became (in 1957) the first of them to stop all passenger service. Yet it was the last to purchase new passenger cars during the era of private enterprise. The explanation of this phenomenon was rapid growth of commuter population in the western suburbs which it served. This Winter cover feature is the third chapter in the story of those ten new cars which had been delivered in 1945 by the St. Louis Car Company.-Thomas H. Desnoyers, Krambles-Peterson Archive
