Softbound in Very Good to Near Fine condition this reprinted copy of MANGA REVA has long been out of print. It includes 286 pages, a FRONTISPIECE, CONTENTS, ILLUSTRATIONS, AN INTRODUCTION TO ROBERT LEE ESKRIDGE, List of ILLUSTRATIONS (13) plus 3 pages of publisher ads, measures approximately 4 ¼" x 7".
The wraps indicate a well cared for unread book. The wraps are smooth and glossy, including the spine. There is modest deckling of the top page edges and tanning of the edges, no corner curls, colors bright and free of fading.
The interior reveals the tight contents of a book that has not opened up. There are no previous owner indications, no marks and interestingly this reprinted book appears completely identical to the original Bobbs-Merrill 1st Edition copy of 1931 except for the photos of the author. Each page number matches the content identically, illustrations the same including Publishers Ads at the rear.
The first time I heard the words, "The Forgotten Islands," was from the lips of Dowager Queen Maraii of Tahiti. Her dark eyes slowly lighted up with some inner fire as she said, "Les Iles Oubliees! Yes, there you will find what you seek, the soul of Polynesia. Go there!" – (excerpt page 15)
MANGA REVA is the story of Robert Lee Eskridge’s first and extended visit to the Island known by that name, one of the Gambier Archepeligo, also referred to as the
Forgotten Islands
, located about 500 nautical miles SE of Tahiti.
An accomplished artist, Mr. Eskridge illustrates his book with 13 block prints and sketches plus word pictures of the small remaining population, the lush tropical forests and the mysteries and intrigue held within. A fascinating glimpse into another world, this reprinted copy of MANGA REVA would be a wonderful addition to a Pacific Island Library.
