Description
For sale is an ethnographic wood canoe bailer from the Maori Tribe of New Zealand.This solid piece is used to remove water from a canoe; the handle is adorned with shell for eyes.
The following is written on the base "carved in Rotorua New Zealand". Rotorua is an area of NZ where the Rotorua School of Maori Art and Crafts was established in 1926. The the purpose of the school was to train Maori artists in their traditions to produce tribal art for the tourist market. This canoe bailer was likely made from early to mid 20th century.
Measurements are 11" L X 3" H X 5 1/2" W and in very good condition.
