MAORI NEW ZEALAND AMO WITH SHELL EYES TRADITIONAL TRIBAL CARVING.The Maori of New Zealand are very skilled carvers of all sorts of materials including wood, bone, ivory, and greenstone. This figure is carved from resin and is of a Maori amo. The amo is a carved human figure which supports parts of the timber which comprise the bargeboard of the roof and would be stationed in the center of the house and support the gable as well as at the sides of the house where the bargeboard slopes downward, acting as pillars. The figures carved are not spiritual or religious but completely secular. The represent an ancestor for whom the house was built. This figurine is carved in the traditional style of the Maori amo and is fitted with shell eyes typical of this type of work. 5 3/4 in. x 1 7/8 in. x 1 1/8 in. Order today!
