    “The Murik reside along the north coast of
    Papua New Guinea
    in the East Sepik Province in the Sepik estuary, an area of mangrove lakes, swamps, and sandy beaches.”
    When attempting to validate the origin of this mask, Ms. Hobbs, in her “tag” note referred to above, observed similarities in its design to Figure 124 in Sotheby’s auction catalog for 11/10/87. As Figure 124 is a “Small Ancestor Figure” from the lower Sepik/Ramu River, it is possible that she may have meant to refer to the adjacent Figure 125, which is an actual mask from the Ramu River area). A copy of the page from the Sotheby’s is included for reference as is her notational tag.
