    New Guinea Artifact of Asmat Figure Holding Ancestor’s Head Tribal Carving Sculpture –Lot F6
    Up for sale is this primitive Asmat tribal artifact carving of a figure holding ancestor’s head; this piece would have been the top part of a pole; the carvings were broken up so that the spirits that were released would not enter and hold back any of the people in the village. Hand carved from a single piece of
    wood with traces of lime, red ochre and charcoal.
    Provenance:
    Private collection. Collected in the early 1970s during an expedition through the rivers of the West Papua New Guinea Region and selected prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.
    This artifact has been kept in storage for over 40 years and it's been offered for sale for the first time since collected.
    Condition:
    This piece is hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen. This artifact would have been the end part of a pole or paddle; it might
