Description
New Guinea Artifact of a Long Bowl with Ancestor Figures on Both Ends Tribal Carving Sculpture –Lot F7Up for sale is this primitive Asmat tribal artifact carving of a Long Bowl with ancestor figure on one end holding Hornbill the other end with ancestor’s head, the body of the bowl is carved with high relief ornamentation. Hand carved from a single piece of
wood with traces of lime, red ochre and charcoal.

Provenance:
Private collection. Collected in the early 1970s during an expedition through the rivers of the West Papua New Guinea Region and selected prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.
This artifact has been kept in storage for over 40 years and it's been offered for sale for the first time since collected.
Condition:
This piece is hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen. This artifact is missing a piece of elbow, tip of nose and legs on the figure and shows signs of old repairs; the bowl’s edge has a chip on the edge; it might
exhibit signs of environmental exposure, insect degradation or utilitarian use, chips, natural wood splits, patina, polish from handling and repairs that are consistent with its age
. Sold as is. Please view detailed photos as part of the description for overall quality, scratches, splits and imperfections. It would make a wonderful addition for the avid collector of New Guinea tribal art.
