Description
Old Pacific Islands (Oceania) carved wooden food pounder, with the pounding end in the form of a banana. Our research considered if this was a tapa bark cloth beater or hand club. However, because of the banana shape, concluded that this is a food pounder. It measures 15 inches (38cm) straight-line length. This food pounder has seen lots of use, with well-worn incised parallel lines on the handle and banana end, cross-hatched lines on the banana end of the handle, incised X inside parallel lines on the tip of the handle
(
See pictures). What looks like a crack in the handle is a natural split (age check) in the wood - still solid and usable. We think this dates to the early 1900s, possibly older.
