Description
Very old ethnic cultural collectible. A Pacific Rim, Native, Handmade, Wooden Hand Press Tool for extracting Coconut Oil and Coconut Milk. Comes with a thatched Palm Frond (Pandanus) Pouch. Age unknown. Origin believed to be from Borneo, Sabah, or Indonesia, not sure, but certainly the Pacific Rim region. The press paddles measure about 18 inches long. Made of hand carved native hardwood. From what I understand, the pouch was filled with chopped or minced coconut meat, then placed between the press paddles and the oil rich liquid was pressed through the pouch acting as a strainer. Coconut oil and milk were used for cooking and other purposes. Condition: The press paddles have suffered some damage at the end where they are strung together with a leather lanyard. Repairs have been attempted. Otherwise in good condition. This piece is intended for display purposes only. The repaired end may be too weak to sustain any pressure. Sold strictly as is.
