S172J, When not at war, the Maori adze is used as a wood working tool. However, it is well documented that this rare weapon is far more feared than an axe for it's unique forged iron blade and long, stout hardwood handle, which imparts incredible leverage and momentum in the 2 handed grip. Fine bamboo wrappings, done artistically, grip the head to the single piece stock. Traces of red ochre coloring evident. 27.5" long, the head is 12" long and the blade is 4.5" wide. All finely made in the old world custom style. Circa 1800's, maybe older. All original, finest example of a very rare weapon of the fierce Maori warrior class. Ship weight is 5 pounds.
