You are bidding on a huge original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal.It depicts a dervish in Sudan preaching in front of a fire. The caption reads: A Dervish Preaching the Holy War ro Arab Chiefs". Included with print is a second page with a 5-inch article on the War in Sudan that describes the scene as a preacher tryng to "raise Muslim fanatacism among the wild and warlike nations of East Africa."
A dervish or darvesh is someone guiding a Sufi Muslim ascetic down a path or "Tariqah", known for their extreme poverty and austerity. Their focus is on the universal values of love and service, deserting the illusions of ego to reach God. In most Sufi orders, a dervish is known to practice dhikr through physical exertions or religious practices to attain the ecstatic trance to reach God. Sufism is defined as the inner mystical dimension of Islam. Practitioners of Sufism, referred to as Sufis.
It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately 22 x 15.5 inches (56 x 40 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. There is unrelated text/photos on the back of this print.
The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. The fold line is clean. However, there are
several small holes along the fold line from where it was sewn into the journal long ago. See scan for an accurate view of the condition.
