    Sepik Drum with Lizard Skin

    The Irian Jaya Region New Guinea -L022
    Up for sale is this one-of-a-kind Hourglass Form Drum (Lot 022) artifact, hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen in the Irian Jaya region, the western half of New Guinea. The body and handle are hand carved with stylized motifs in high relief; handle has one human figure at the bottom, hornbills and 'was' tail of a cuscus. Lizard skin and rattan, painted with white chalk and some traces of red ochre.
    Provenance:
    A private collection. Collected during an expedition in the early 1970s into the interior of the region of New Guinea and personally selected art prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.
    Condition:
    This piece is one-of-a-kind, hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen. This artifact is in very good condition it might exhibit signs of environmental exposure, insect degradation or utilitarian use, chips, natural wood splits, patina, polish from handling and repairs that are consistent with its age.
