The Signode Steel Strapping Company was founded in 1913 by Ellsworth E. Flora and J. Fremont Murphy as the Seal and Fastener Company. Located in Chicago, the company developed the first fully automatic power strapping machine (1946), revolutionizing the packaging business. Signode was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1955. As time progressed, the company shifted away from steel strapping materials and shifted to plastic, polypropylene and polyester materials. In 1982, Signode Corporation became Signode Industries Inc. in one of the largest leveraged buy-outs in American business history at that time.
