Vintage BUKA Basket Papua New Guinea Tonga? c1960 Lid Handle Open Weave Mono

For your consideration is a beautiful “Buka” basket handmade / woven by tribal peoples of Buka Island, Papua New Guinea. The basket dates from at least the 1960’s and came to the Pacific Northwest also during that time by a world traveler and extensive basket collector of indigenous peoples. Tourism didn’t come to this area in mass until the late 1970’s so this basket predates baskets made for tourism.
I was also told this basket might be a Tongan basket. Please compare and contrast.
This basket is carefully handwoven as a temporary basket for proper holding baskets. They were commonly used to trade for goods, ceremonial objects such as bride price or gifts.

*tapered basket bowl with two dark brown check rings and nine faint medium diamonds
*lid is three layered tiered to the lid handle
*handle is continuous even under the basket bowl
Side Note: Buka Island (same island from one of six Amelia Earhart’s crash site theories)

:
*14 inches tall
*6 ½ inches tall to bowl lid
*2 ¼ inches tall lid
*8 inch diameter basket bowl
*6 ½ inch diameter basket base
Condition:
*very good vintage condition
* basket is not totally symmetrical
*due to design of handle, basket has ½ inch teeter from one side to another
*lid sits well on an unsymmetrical basket opening
*possibly a couple broken stitches
*a little dusty due to decades of display
